a new musical instrument exploration

Tangible Interactions 2020

Project Developed in Collaboration with Sarah Liriano

This project has the inspiration of create a new musical instrument developed

The main idea of this project was to create or explore the concept or a new musical instrument. In this experience we tried to recreate the concept of an air instrument that can be performed for people with no much knowledge of music this were our first concept was to create an experience that was similar to a piano, but also we wanted to have a sweet sound that was more approachable to a Theremin. This simple exploration was developed in long distance and during a pandemic, with small resources we needed to be really creative with the small things that we had available during this hard time.

This were some of our first sketches:

This instrument was developed using Arduino Mkr 1o1o, ultrasonic sensors and a potentiometer. Coded in C++.

Design Process

Final Words

For our next iteration we would like to create a real human size experience where the user can create the sound of each note by moving their complete body and have as feedback a indicator of how the tone change adding to the sound, like different light indicators and motion of the instrument that we ambition will be a very large structure. This experience was really helpful for us to work together even being physically separated and helped us to be more creative with less resources and explore new topics for us.
